From 9/11 Trauma Loops to AI Doom-Mongering

Today marks 25 years since 9/11. My ex-Google friend Nicholas W. recently posted about how our feeds devolve into an annual ritual of performative trauma loops. We get stuck in a moment of collective fear instead of actually moving forward. He called it a "trauma cult." 

He’s right.

But look at how that same architecture of fear is being actively repurposed right now. We are watching the exact same playbook unfold with AI.

We keep seeing these amplified headlines: a fired researcher from a major lab warns that AI will kill us all by the end of the decade. The media blasts it, and suddenly everyone is debating 1960s Terminator scenarios.

When you actually spend your time in the weeds - architecting governance engines, configuring autonomous agents, or spinning up local models - the "extinction by 2030" narrative sounds less like a genuine technical warning and more like a highly coordinated PR strategy.

Why normalize this doom-mongering? It's a calculated bet by the major players on the world stage:

• The Ultimate Valuation Pitch: If you claim your technology is dangerous enough to end the world, you are simultaneously signaling to investors that you are building an engine of unprecedented, god-like economic value. Doom is mostly marketing.
• Building the Regulatory Moat: Framing AI as a weapon of mass destruction pushes lawmakers toward heavy-handed compliance and strict licensing. It’s a deliberate strategy to lock down the ecosystem, box out smaller open-source innovation, and ensure only a few massive corporations control the infrastructure.
• Boiling the Frog: By stretching the Overton window to "human extinction," the actual, immediate issues like unchecked data scraping, shifting labor markets, and a total lack of enterprise guardrails seem trivial by comparison.

We are constantly being manipulated by our own nervous systems when we don’t recognize the above. 

The post-9/11 culture of fear gave us the Patriot Act, forever wars, and perpetual surveillance. The AI doom narrative is designed to give a handful of tech giants (and their governments) permanent regulatory and social capture.

We can't predict the future, but we can recognize when a story is being engineered to keep us dysregulated, scared, and compliant. This is not a new phenomenon or technique.
